What You Should Know Before Going To An Open House

Updated February 27, 2015

Whether you are selling your home, in the market for a new home, or just getting started with your home search, attending open houses in Nanaimo can be fun, interesting and educational. To get the most out of going to open houses, here are a few things you should know:

1.  If you're working with a realtor, be sure to bring her card along with you and let the agent showing the open house know that you have a real estate agent representing you.  Everyone will appreciate this, and just as importantly you will also be viewed as being a more serious prospective buyer than somebody who just happened to wander in the front door.

2.  Have a general idea of what houses in the area you are looking in have been selling for and what the current asking prices are.  No two homes in Nanaimo are exactly the same, and every real estate transaction is unique.  But, if you have an idea of what homes are going for before you visit an open house you will be better able to judge what makes the home you are viewing different from the rest of the houses that are on the market.

3.  Explore the neighborhood to get an idea of what you like and don't like.  An open house lets you see the real home and its 'natural' surroundings, instead of just reading an advertisement or a printout from the MLS that your realtor gave you.  Among other things, you can pay particular attention to what the neighbors are really like - if there are messy yards, unkept homes with a lot of work that needs to be done, or annoying barking dogs, you may find from the open house that there area is not really one that you want to live in.
