Top 7 reasons to move and raise your family in Nanaimo
Top 7 reasons to move and raise your family in Nanaimo
Four years ago we made a decision to move our family to Nanaimo from the lower mainland. I have to admit I was nervous about the move and worried about our kids. We have two boys now aged 12 and 19. As many parents do, I lost numerous hours of sleep worrying about them and how they would adjust. Fast forward four years and here we are; delighted with our choice to move to Nanaimo!
I would like to share with you why our move turned out to be such a success and why I think Nanaimo is a wonderful place to raise a family.
People - Nanaimo is made up of approximately 80,000 people. Many of whom, like us, have moved here from elsewhere. The people are friendly and for the most part happy to be here. Many of them made a decision to move here and feel that their lifestyle has improved because of that decision.
Nature - Everywhere you look you have choices in how you can participate in Nature. You have wonderful Islands just a short boat ride from downtown Nanaimo, you have mountains around you to hike and explore, beaches to beachcomb, and many lakes for canoeing and fishing.
Organized sports - Our boys are hockey and baseball players. We have been delighted with the choices we have had here for our boy's sports. The Associations on a whole are well organized and offer many opportunities to kids.
Recreational facilities - Nanaimo has five sheets of ice, plus a curling rink. We also have two wonderful indoor swimming pools with slides and waves.
Parks and playgrounds - Every neighbourhood in Nanaimo seems to have a park. In fact Nanaimo has what I believe to be the best adventure playground I have ever seen. It is called Oliver Woods.
Vancouver Island University - Nanaimo now has a University. It is no longer necessary to ship your kids away to attend university.
Opportunities - By living in a smaller city, with fewer people, I feel that our kids have had better opportunities to enrich themselves at a higher level than they would have had in a larger centre. The competition is less intense.
