Three Things To Consider When Buying A Home Alone

Updated March 9, 2015

Today, more and more single people are buying homes than ever before. In fact, some experts estimate that over 33% of home buyers in today's market are going it alone.  While real estate can be a great investment - regardless of your marital or relationship status - there are a few things to consider if you are buying your home alone. First, consider what type of area you want to be in.  Many single home buyers look for a smaller place that is easier to take care of.  For those without children, being near a good school or shopping isn't all that important.  Solo home buyers often prefer buying in more urban areas rather than in the suburbs. Secondly, think about what type of home you want to buy.  While most home buyers automatically consider buying a single-family home, if you're single, buying a traditional house may not make a lot of sense.  Many singles instead opt for a town home or condominium.  These types of homes are often more attractive to the solo buyer - they tend to be smaller, requiring less up keep and maintenance. Thirdly, spend some time thinking about just how long you will be in your new home.  If you are a single professional, you are probably climbing the career ladder and often times moving to the next rung of the ladder means moving to a new city as well.  Career aside, that 'special someone' could be just around the corner, and that means that the comfortable home you bought when you were solo could quickly become just a little too cosy for two! If you are single in Nanaimo and thinking about buying a home for yourself, take some time and talk to your realtor.  She can help you carefully consider all of the pros and cons of the different types of homes on the market, and also help you think ahead to when the time comes to sell as well.
