Nanaimo’s Nanaimo Bars

I was thumbing through Nanaimo’s Best of the City Guide. I was intrigued to read about a self-directed tour through Nanaimo called the ‘Nanaimo Bar Trail’.

Destination Nanaimo has compiled a list of 12 different places to go and sample 12 different types of Nanaimo Bars.  I visited www.nanaimo.ca to read more about it.  The tour takes you through downtown and the Old City Quarter. 

 With 12 different Nanaimo Bars to sample you may need to break up the tour over a few days or wear elastic waist pants!!.

Traditional Nanaimo Bars are available at the following locations:

·         Serious Coffee 300-60 Commercial Street (adjacent to the Museum)

·         Perkins Coffee Co. 234 Commercial Street

·         Bocca Café 427 Fitzwilliam St (Old City Quarter)

·         McLean’s Specialty Foods 426 Fitzwilliam St (Old City Quarter)

·         Javawocky Coffee House 8-90 Front Street (on the Harbourfront Walkway)

·         A Wee Cupcakery 407 Fitzwilliam Street (Old City Quarter)

·         Tea Leaf Specialty Teas & Cafe 138 Commercial Street (downtown)

 The following is a list of non-traditional types of Nanaimo Bars and where you can find them:

 Organic - Mon Petit Choux 120 Commercial Street.

 Deep Fried – Pirate Chips 1 Commercial Street

 Ice Cream – Tea on The Quay, located along the harbour walkway at Suite 4-90 Front Street.

 Cheesecake - Minnoz Restaurant and Lounge with great harbour views.

 Cupcake - A Wee Cupcakery in the Old City Quarter.

 Martini – Modern Café

 Fudge - Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is offering a Nanaimo Bar flavoured fudge.  You can find there store at the Departure Bay Ferry Terminal.

 Vegan - The Blue Jewel Bakery (3018 Ross Rd) and Tea Leaf Specialty Teas & Cafe (13B Commercial St).

 Shooter - Millers Pub on the waterfront, by the Departure Bay Ferry terminal.

 Nanaimo Bar Cocktail - Grand Hotel (4898 Rutherford Road)

 Caffe Latte – Available at The Modern Café.
