How To Paint Your Home To Sell

Updated February 24, 2015

Most people planning on selling their home in Nanaimo know that a coat of fresh paint can make a world of difference when selling a house . . . but did you know that there is a right way and a wrong way to paint your home when you are selling it?

Here are a few general rules to follow to get the most from your fresh paint:

  1. Avoid loud, brash colours - Prospective buyers need to be able to imagine that they are living in your home.  They need to be able to envision what their furniture will look like in your rooms and what their art work will look like on your walls.  For this they need nice, neutral coloured paint.
  2. Paint the ceiling - If your home has a paintable ceiling, take the time and effort to give it a new coat of ceiling paint.  This is the one surface that many people don't re-paint, yet it can make a big, big difference in brightening up a room.
  3. Use accent paint on doors, base boards, and door trim - You can use neutral coloured accent paint on these surfaces to enhance and add contrast to the neutral colours that you've used for the walls.
  4. Choose trending colours - As long as the colours you choose are not loud and brash, it's all right to select 'today's colours'.  Buyers looking at your home will appreciate the time and thought that you've put into your colour choices, and they will know that they have the newest, in vogue paint in their new home.
