A great crop of blackberries in Nanaimo

I know, I know, you are probably wondering why, as a Nanaimo Realtor, I would write a blog post about blackberries!?  Well today was all about blackberries.

I had a very busy weekend hosting two open houses and working with a buyer.  I was just closing up my open house yesterday, looking forward to an evening of R & R, when I received a text from my husband.  “I’ve been picking blackberries all afternoon.  I’ve left them in the kitchen for you”.  Bless his heart!  I say that with just a trace of sarcasm.  Actually, I was delighted to get all those berries – I emphasize all!  I really was…..  However, as you know; big, ripe, juicy blackberries spoil very quickly.  I guess I knew what was ahead for me.

It is 2:00 on Monday afternoon and I have just finished a morning of preparing pies, berry crisps and freezing blackberries.  My nails are black!  I have to admit I enjoyed myself.  I am a real nester and I love the fall when it is time to preserve all those wonderful summer fruits and veggies.

While I am in this preserving mode I thought I would share a couple of yummy blackberry recipes with you.

Here is a delicious blackberry pie recipe.  I know it is delicious because I had to carve out just a small piece so I would feel comfortable recommending it.

My family loves crisps.  I found this delicious berry crisp recipe online.

If you enjoy protein or yogurt shakes; adding blackberries to them makes them soooo tasty.  Here is some information on how to freeze blackberries so you can enjoy them all winter.

Happy preserving!
