Dry Grad in Nanaimo

I spent last Thursday night volunteering at this year's Dry Grad in Nanaimo.  What a fantastic event it was for the Nanaimo and Ladysmith grads.

Dry Grad in Nanaimo provides graduating students with the opportunity to celebrate their success at an alcohol and drug-free event.  It was a night of fun activities.  In fact, I would have loved to have been allowed to participate in some of the games and activities.

There were pool activities that included kayaking, water games, skating in the rink, competitions and so much more.  In addition to activities there were tables laden with food to keep the kids going all night.

Dry Grad in NanaimoI was in an area where there was spa services including hair, make up and henna hand painting.  I was in the clairvoyance room.  We dressed up as gypsy fortune tellers and did Tarot card readings and Angel cards.  The kids loved it.

I am not a professional Tarot card reader, actually none of the volunteers were.  We had training on how to read them.  It was fun and I have to say I have a new respect for Tarot cards.  The readings were often very accurate.

Dry Grad in Nanaimo went from 8:00 pm to 5:00 a.m.  At 4:00 am there was a huge draw for prizes donated by the very generous sponsors of Dry Grad.

Dry Grad in Nanaimo is funded through Business and community donations which represent approximately 35%, ticket sales by students add an additional 40%, and fundraising provides the remaining expenses.

Some of the major sponsors of Dry Grad in Nanaimo are Quality Foods, Co-Op Gas Bars and Dugy's Bottle Depots Ltd. to name just a few.

B.C. Liquor Stores continue to support alcohol-free high school graduation events.  Last year, B.C. Liquor Stores customers across the province donated a total of $548,157 in support of dry graduation events.

Apparently, it takes over 300 volunteers to run a successful Dry Grad in Nanaimo.  If you would like to help out at next years Dry Grad please contact me and I will put you in touch with the right person.
